Self Portraits
May.10.2011 09:29
Many of us document ourselves with different mediums. It could be “When can I see You Again” by Babyface that suddenly brings us back to the time of our first love, a smell of porkchops that reminds us of our grandma’s cooking at 12, or simply a photograph of a horrible hairdo back in college of ’03. Whatever it is, we are constantly logging our timeline consciously and unconsciously. For artist Shawn Van Daele, he creates/manipulates photos into a surreal state. Which is the real state? Dream within the reality? Or the reality within the Dream? And that is his chosen medium for his self portraits.
When asked why his self-portraits have that surreal storytelling spin, here's what Van Daele told us: "It feels the most 'real' to me. It's much easier for me to recreate my imagination's image of what I'm feeling than to find it in the world around me. I like that the surrealism triggers something different in each person, while it's still meaningful to me specifically...sort of a choose your own adventure."

“Faith is not something to grasp, it is a state to grow into.” - M. Gandhi

“There is a silence where hath been no sound/ There is a silence where no sound may be/ In the cold grave, under the deep deep sea...” - Thomas Hood (The Piano)

Spaceship? Patterns?
Apr.06.2011 11:20

Architecture charms me to death. I do not know much about it, but it talks to me like clothing patterns do. 2D to 3D. It looks extremely complex, especially when you factor space into it, yet simply beautiful. At any second, this spaceship could fly...and I’d happily jump in for the ride. To infinite and beyond!

Fly Fishing

Maybe it’s because I’m a *fish, maybe it’s because I’m drawn to the connections of raw materials, to animal chain, to nature, to Life as a whole, but this is one of the most beautiful art/hooks I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you Shawn Davis.

I am always attracted to wood and metal, separate and apart. This amazing Brooklyn Furniture company takes this form of art to the highest level of craftsmanship. If there is humbleness to inanimate objects, I feel it when I see their work. It is modern yet understated. It gives you a feel of home with just enough clean lines, but its imperfections is what makes it beautiful.

White Christmas came a day late this year. Below is a shoot from Vogue China 2005. That’s the fairy tale version of what’s going on in the streets here in NYC.

Filicudi
Nov.20.2010 01:51
These photographs are of a house in the island of Filicudi by Sergio Ghetti. I love the clean, simple look with washed-out colors. It seems as if it’s been laundered and exposed under the sun for years. The textures of the stones, especially the bathroom, is just the right amount to not overwhelm with glitz and patterns. Serenity.

So in love with this bathroom.

Mass MOCA at Berkshires
Sep.28.2010 11:42
MASS MoCA is one of the most extraordinary museum spaces in terms of history, space, and art. It has more than 200 years of economic, industrial, and architectural development that maps the history of New England Industrialism. It’s located in North Adams, Massachusetts and is comprised of 19th-century factory buildings. The vibe in town is still very industrial, a little dry, but beautiful.

In LOVE, more than you’ll ever know. The wood paneling is amazing. And the rest of it almost looks a little Japanese to me with the obi like waists and pairing of fabrics. But wooo, that lime green, it’s like Jill Sander running in the woods. Did I mention...AMAZING.?!

Fashion Illustration

Sketching, is my favorite part of designing, next to seeing the actual sample come through. Sketching allows you to go crazy with your creativity. And that’s where a lot of designer’s personality comes out. Not only is it fashion, it’s beautiful illustrations or paintings. Below are some of my favorites.
